What we do

A small studio, slow methods, work you can sit on for decades.

Turboniq is the kind of atelier you visit once, leave with sketches, and come back to months later to see something you described in your living room become an object on the floor. We design, prototype, build, finish, deliver and install every piece in-house — nothing is subcontracted offshore.

Most of our work is private commissions for homes in Sabah, Penang and the Klang Valley. We also fit out boutique hotels, restaurants and design-led offices when the brief calls for furniture that has to last a thousand sittings.

Process

From a first sketch on tracing paper to a piece on your floor.

Every commission moves through four unhurried stages. You will meet the person doing the carving, see the timber before it is cut, and approve the finish on a sample before we go anywhere near the final piece.

Brief

We spend an afternoon talking through the room, your routines, who sits where, and what light is in the space. We leave with measurements and rough sketches.

Design

You receive scale drawings, material samples and a fixed quote within two weeks. We refine the design together until it is exactly the piece you imagined.

Build

The piece is shaped by hand in our Kepayan workshop. You are welcome to visit during the build — many clients do.

Deliver

Our own crew delivers and installs the piece in your home or venue, then walks you through care and maintenance so it lasts a generation.

Polished slab of Malaysian merbau hardwood with brass detail

Materials

Hardwood, rattan, leather and brass — sourced as close to home as possible.

We work mostly with FSC-certified merbau, chengal, white oak and walnut. Our rattan comes from a Borneo cooperative, our leather from tanneries in Kuala Lumpur, our brass hardware from a third-generation foundry in Selangor. When a piece needs an imported veneer we will tell you exactly why.

  • Solid timber, never veneered chipboard unless the brief calls for it
  • Joinery first: mortise-and-tenon, dovetails, finger joints — no exposed screws
  • Oils and waxes we mix in-house, no factory polyurethane shells
  • Hardware that can be unscrewed and replaced fifty years from now

In their words

"The dining table is the centre of every dinner we host now. Friends ask where it's from. We tell them about the visit to the workshop in Kepayan, and they go quiet."— Lim Wei Han, Kota Kinabalu
"We commissioned eighteen lobby chairs, a reception desk and two banquettes for our boutique hotel. They arrived on time, finished better than we expected, and three years in they look like they did the day they came."— Pooja Subramaniam, owner, The Linnet House

Questions clients ask first

Before you commission a piece

How much does a bespoke piece cost?

An armchair starts around RM 4,200 in linen with a hardwood frame. A six-seat dining table in solid merbau is usually RM 9,500 to RM 14,000 depending on dimensions and finish. We give you a fixed quote in writing before any timber is cut, and there are no change-order surprises.

How long does a commission take?

Twelve weeks is typical from approved drawings to delivery. Larger fit-outs run sixteen to twenty weeks. We share a build schedule with milestone dates at the start, and we will tell you the moment anything looks like it might slip.

Can I see and choose the timber before you cut it?

Yes — we encourage it. Visiting the workshop and walking the timber yard is part of why most clients come back for a second piece. If you can't make it to Sabah, we ship samples to anywhere in Malaysia.

Do you deliver outside Sabah?

We deliver and install across Malaysia. Peninsular Malaysia deliveries are handled by a partner logistics firm using climate-controlled trucks. International shipping is possible by sea freight — speak to us early so we can plan crating and timber documentation.

What kind of warranty do you offer?

Every joinery joint, frame and structural element carries a ten-year guarantee. Upholstery cushions and fabric carry a three-year warranty against manufacturing defect. Wear from daily life is, of course, exactly what the pieces are made for.

Do you do commercial work?

Roughly a third of our work is commercial — boutique hotels, independent restaurants, design-led co-working studios. We can run a project of up to eighty matched pieces in a single brief and have completed two full hotel openings to date.

Can I restore or re-upholster an existing piece?

If it has good bones, almost always yes. We re-glue and re-tighten frames, replace springs and webbing, and re-upholster in your chosen fabric. We will be honest if a piece is past the point of sensible restoration.

Have a room or a venue in mind?

Send us measurements, sketches, mood images — anything. We will reply within two working days with first questions and an honest sense of fit.
